Given the extraordinary focus placed on the consumer wine evaluation and our Consumer Wine Preferences study this year the organizers of the Consumer Wine Awards at Lodi have decided to forgo the Label Art competition. We plan to expand our focus next year to include an exciting evaluation of Label Art in concert with our on-going studies to correlate art preferences to sensory sensitivity and wine preferences. Thank you so much for considering the submission of your wines for our 2010 event and we promise to continue exploring and defining new ways to provide valuable consumer insights and opportunities for the wine industry at large!
Dear Winery,
This competition is different from any competition you have, or have not, ever entered.
Yeah, I know, you’ve heard that before — but here is the difference:
- Every day consumers will be evaluating and rating your wines – not trained (and inherently biased) wine judges. NOTE: we do not in any way infer this is a better means of evaluation but simply a consumer-centric alternative to traditional wine competitions.
- No other competition has used the scientific background and 7,000 plus consumer surveys to form the basis of judging that we will be using.
- We will be the first to employ cutting-edge scientific research and insights on taste sensitivities into the wine awards determination process.
- The resulting awards from our 2010 CWAL will garner more mainstream national and international press than any other wine evaluation program
(for example see, Wall Street Journal, Jan. 19, 2008 or
the Washington Post, March 11, 2008 or even
the Washington Post, March 12, 2008)
Here is what we believe:
- Taste sensitivity can vary widely from one person to the next and is one of the major factors influencing wine preferences.
- This holds true for wine professionals and consumers alike.
- Research shows that people can be classified along a taste sensitivity continuum and then segmented into one of four sensitivity/preference categories representing sweet, hyper-sensitive, sensitive and tolerant tasters.
- Taste sensitivity is a matter of physiology and there is no inherent advantage in being at any point along this continuum – just differences in perception.
- Sensitivity combined with memories, learning and life experiences shape our final sense of value and quality and is taken into account.
Here is our revolutionary and proven process, created in conjunction with sensory specialists over the past 3 years:
- Consumer Wine Evaluators will be selected to participate on evaluation panels and assess the wines submitted.
- Each tasting panel will be evaluating wine that fit their flavor preference standards: those who love sweet wines evaluate sweet wines. Those who love intense, tannic red wines evaluate intense, tannic red wines, and so on.
- Final awards will be provided in a way that consumers can find the panels that match their own preferences and find the wines that were rated most highly by that panel.
Here is what the consumer gets:
- A consumer-to-consumer evaluation of wines combined with the means for finding new wines to explore and try.
Here is what you, the winery, get:
- Consumer Wine Preference survey results and data: www.surveymonkey.com/s/L2HNDJX
- Results on how your wines fared in the evaluation against the competition
- Potential promotion of your wines by Retail, Restaurant and Hotel Affiliates who agree to buy and promote highly rated wines.
